News in Brief: MALAGA Provincial Court has sentenced a 31-year-old man to seven years in prison for attempting to rape his cellmate at Alhaurin de la Torre prison in March 2007.

The two men were in the infirmary when the accused, who is originally from Mali, attacked the victim, also aged 31 and suffering from schizophrenia, when he was lying on his side on the bed. The two men fought and the victim suffered several contusions to the face and head.

The attacker finally pinned the other man down and removed the victim’s trousers and underwear, but prison staff prevented the attack from going any further.

Although he claimed to have mental problems, the court believes he knew what he was doing and took advantage of the fact the victim was vulnerable.
